How to Use Your Turbohaler
The Turbohaler is a dry powder inhaler that delivers medication when your child breathes in. It’s breath-activated – so proper technique is essential to make sure the medicine reaches the lungs and works effectively.
If you’re unsure whether your child is using the device correctly, a specialist review with Professor Atul Gupta can help ensure safe and effective asthma control.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Remove the cover
Unscrew and lift off the protective cap - Check the dose counter
Make sure there is medicine left in the device - Prime the inhaler
Hold the Turbohaler upright
Twist the base grip in one direction, then back again until you hear a click – this loads the dose - Breathe out fully
Encourage your child to breathe out gently (away from the device) before inhaling - Place the mouthpiece in the mouth
Seal lips tightly around the mouthpiece – don’t bite down - Take a long, strong breath in
Breathe in deeply and forcefully. This pulls the medicine into the lungs - Hold the breath
After removing the inhaler, hold the breath for up to 10 seconds - Repeat as needed
Wait a short time, then repeat the steps for the prescribed number of puffs
