How to Use My Child’s Inhalers
Inhalers only work when they’re used properly. Even with the right medication, poor technique can mean your child isn’t getting the correct dose into their lungs – putting them at risk of worsening symptoms, flare-ups, and even asthma attacks.
If you’ve never had your child’s inhaler technique reviewed, or you’re unsure if they’re using it correctly, it’s a good time to book a specialist review with Professor Atul Gupta.
Using an AeroChamber Spacer with a Mask
(Typically used for infants and young children)
- First use and monthly cleaning
Wash the spacer in warm soapy water (do not rinse), then air dry fully before use. This removes static and improves delivery. Repeat monthly. - Shake and insert
Shake the inhaler well and insert it into the hole at the end of the spacer. - Seal the mask
Gently place the mask over your child’s mouth and nose, ensuring a tight seal. - Deliver the medication
Press down on the inhaler to release one puff of medication. - Normal breathing for 10 seconds
Encourage your child to breathe normally for around 10 seconds. Watch for the small valve fluttering with each breath. - Repeat as needed
Wait 30 seconds between puffs and repeat until the full dose has been given. - Clean up
After using an inhaled steroid, give your child a drink or brush their teeth, and wipe their face to help prevent mouth irritation.
Using an AeroChamber Spacer with a Mouthpiece
(Often used by older children who can breathe through the mouth reliably)
- Ready to use out of the packet
The spacer can be used straight from the box the first time. After that, clean monthly: take it apart, wash in warm soapy water, rinse, and air dry. - Shake and load
Shake the inhaler well and place it into the end of the spacer. - Mouthpiece positioning
Ask your child to place their teeth and lips over the mouthpiece, creating a firm seal. - Release a puff
Press the inhaler to release one puff of medication. - Breathe in normally for 10 seconds
Encourage your child to breathe slowly and normally for 10 seconds, watching the valve flutter. - Repeat as needed
Wait 30 seconds between puffs and continue until all prescribed doses are given. - Rinse and wipe
After using a steroid inhaler, help your child rinse their mouth or clean their teeth and wipe their face to reduce the risk of side effects.
